Tarpon Springs

Tarpon Springs Florida certainly has a grand location on the Gulf of Mexico and living here is a fountain of treasure with all the fresh fish you can eat, all the sponges you could possibly need and historical significance for cultural pleasure. There are more sponges found here than any other place in the world and also the highest percentage of Greek Americans of any US city. The charming downtown of Tarpon Springs is a Historic Place with its brick lined streets, antique shops and very old buildings dating from the late 1800’s. The low slow moving bayous that feed from Tarpon Springs into the Gulf of Mexico were discovered by fisherman in the late 1800’s and with jumping fish, they decided to settle here. Between the abundance of fish and sponges, businesses thrived and homes were settled. The first Greek immigrants came here around the turn of the century to work in these fields. Diving for sponges became a very competitive business but soon died almost 50 years later with the red tide killed them all. Fishing quickly took over as an income source with sponge diving coming back respectively since.

Dodecanese Avenue is one of the more popular streets for living and touring. You will find the marina, sponge docks, restaurants, seafood stores and all sorts of tourist items. Beaches are off to the west and you can enjoy beautiful sunsets, shell spotting, dolphin and manatee playing, swimming, and boating of all types, picnics and even windsurfing. Museums and Cultural Centers provide fascinating history of this one of a kind place. Yearly celebrations of all types draw Greek Americans from this country and beyond. Victorian mansions line the bayous today as a reminder of the days when wealthy vacationers came down from New York.
